THE MATTHEW BARNEY SHOW is an outgrowth of CremasterFanatic.com, a web-based project Eric Doeringer launched in 2004. CremasterFanatic.com appears to be a "fan site" dedicated to Matthew Barney but is actually a conceptual artwork exploring the idea of fandom and the intersection between the art world and popular culture. Doeringer chose Barney as a subject over other "art stars" because Barney's photogenic features and romance with Icelandic pop singer Bjork have propelled his celebrity beyond the confines of the art world. Timed to coincide with Barney's Drawing Restraint exhibition at SFMOMA, THE MATTHEW BARNEY SHOW seeks to both exploit and augment the hype that accompanies any new Matthew Barney project.
Matthew Barney is widely regarded as one of today's most important artists. He received the 1996 Hugo Boss Prize and the Europa 2000 Prize at the 1993 Venice Biennale. His Cremaster Cycle was the subject of a traveling exhibition organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2003. An exhibition of Barney's Drawing Restraint project is on view at SFMOMA through September 17.
Eric Doeringer is a Brooklyn-based artist who is best known for his "Bootlegs" -inexpensive copies of work by other contemporary artists. He has exhibited internationally at venues including the Prague Biennale 2, The Currier Museum, White Columns, Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, The Frieze Art Fair, and The Armory Show. THE MATTHEW BARNEY SHOW, his first curatorial project, premiered in April 2006 at Jack the Pelican Presents in Brooklyn, NY, before traveling to boca in San Francisco.
